Mind, body, spirit. It’s nothing new, but it’s easily overlooked.
The 2014 Winter Olympics are over but I still relive those breathtaking winning moments. All those young athletes had trained most of their lives in order to perform their best and win the gold.
Business is just like the Olympics. To succeed you have to stay in shape.
Your head has to be in the right place and your body has to be in the right place too.
You have to realize that what you have is a tremendous gift – the opportunity to do your best every day. When running a small business, you can’t just do your best. You have to do better than your best. I see being given that opportunity as a great privilege.
The Rettig Guide To Olympic Success
- Nourish your body: To be at your best, it’s important to eat right. Make sure you walk every day because it gets the blood flowing to bring oxygen into your brain.
- Get some sleep: Every morning you get a certain about of ‘juice’ (energy) and that’s all you get for the day. It does not carry over to the next day. It is necessary to work as hard as you can before 10:00 in the morning to use that good juice. You never know what is going to happen during the day to drain it from you. I’m working day and night because I don’t want to miss out on anything. But before I go to bed at the end of the day, I know I have had a good day if my head is asleep before it hits the pillow.
- Hit the gym: If you’re like me and you work really hard, you have to stay sharp. You have to eat right and work out. You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete, but you have to look after your mind and body.
No one knows what it’s like to run a small business unless he’s done it himself. Look after yourself because losing your business is not an option. I have never heard anyone say “I lost my business and I now work at Kmart and I’ve never been happier.” Remember that you mind, body and spirit are the gateway to your business’s greatest success.
