Work / Life Balance
![]() |
BALANCE. IT’S INCONVENIENT AND UNCOMFORTABLE, BUT ESSENTIAL. Balance is the most misunderstood concept in the world. Everybody’s balance seems to be predicated on what they want to do rather than what they need to do. If you can’t pay your bills, you’re out of balance. As a result, you’re not taking care of yourself, your family, or your business. |
The problem with effective balance is that a person needs to be willing to do it with absolute dedication. There is no way to succeed at all that needs to be done. Your personal well-being is a full-time job in and of itself. Your family is a full-time job. Your business is a full-time job. Your spouse is a full-time job. The relationships you have with your employees are a full-time job. People tend to pick and choose what is most comfortable or what is easily done. Most of the time we leave the difficult things to a later time or maybe never at all. The trick is to prioritize what needs to be done and then, get it done.
Doing tasks to completion is a difficult assignment. People try to get as much done as they can rather than completing it. The truth is, it is a lot easier to do things one at a time and complete the chore rather than to multi-task and complete nothing. The trick is knowledge and practice. Learning how to do tasks. In the following articles, we will talk about personal health, family health, and business health. Before we begin, may I say, what you are about to learn is highly inconvenient and uncomfortable, however, it will lead to a successful life.
Money isn’t just about earning. It’s about living, life choices, and your health which includes the mind, body, and spirit. We call that the triangle.
The Triangle: 3 sides, Mind Body Spirit
All sides are equally important, but let’s start with the mind. If we don’t constantly fill our minds with new and exciting things, our minds will invent new and exciting things that are filled with fear, anxiety, and lust. I’m not discounting that these things can’t be adventuresome. However, if you want to make money, you need to fill your mind with pertinent information, hope, enchantment, and love. Let me take myself for example. I love my work. I help all kinds of people. I read all kinds of pertinent information regarding the law. But, if that’s all that I did, I’d become stale and stagnant and definitely not very interesting. That being said, I could still do my job. There are plenty of boring insolvency experts. The problem, my friends, is creativity. A mind without creativity is useless. There are very few boring individuals that are wildly creative and make tons of money. As a matter of fact, it is quite the opposite.
I see my clients primarily in a five-state area. I have two airplanes that I fly myself. I seldom miss an appointment. My eyes see magnificent things outside the windows of my airplane and I am reminded of how remarkable this world really is. In times of bad weather, I am reminded of awesome Mother Nature can be and that my life can be gone in an instant. By the time I get to my clients, I am refreshed and the knowledge of my trip, and I am grateful for our meeting. My clients and I discuss the better points of the good things in our life and that the difficulties before them are temporary. It’s a turbo-charged day and it’s barely past 7 a.m.
When I study law, it is not exciting to me, but it is very important that I know the rules. I take periodic breaks in my legal study to enjoy reading about airplanes, motorcycles, and children. I have a 10-year-old daughter and I need to keep up on the latest inventive ways to keep her interested in the good things in life and NOT the television set.
Since I am not an avid reader, it’s important that I force myself to learn and read anyway. The way that I do that is that I balance between my law and finance studies while glancing now and then at my latest chopper bike, airplane, and fitness magazine. These little short blurbs keep my mind engaged. Also, it is vitally important that you break away to see live theater and any form of music and art. I believe that the language of heaven can be found in ancient historical artwork all the way up to our blessed rock-and-roll of today.
Having given a few examples, I must leave this point with a couple of important comments. First, everything that I do, I have become consistent with over the years, in fact, one might say I am dedicated to an extreme. My life didn’t happen overnight. I’ve been working on it day by day for many years, diligently and tirelessly. I have listed only a few things here. There are many more. A well-rounded leader should always be aware of the planet he/she lives on. Second, although I have given the impression that these diversions are important, please understand, that my work and the administration of my business are the first priority. Without my business, it wouldn’t matter what kind of a well-rounded human being that I am. All these things are important so that I’m able to pay tuition for my children, take care of my wife, the future, and myself.
Now, there are two more sides to this triangle and then a bonus point, so be advised today is about your mind, next time we will read about exercise and the real way to stay in shape, not the easy way.
Balance is not what you see fit to do; it is not convenient and it is not comfortable. Balance is what must be done so that you do not fall off the bar and on your face, failing in both your personal life as well as your business. Without balance, life is just not as much fun.
